So many treatise have been written on Faith that some of them have become known literature. There are several definitions of faith, all one needs is a dictionary.
Rather than looking at faith in others, all we wish to investigate here is ‘religious’ faith.
One definition of faith is belief in the unknown or unseen. Belief not based on proof. Faith can be held in a religious doctrine, creed or code of ethics in addition to ‘God’. It has become known in a wider sense as a denomination, nearly. It can be said that if you are a Jew or Christian that you are of the ‘faithful’.
What is Faith really though? Are we all born with it? Is it learned and if so can it be developed and improved upon?
When we are born, we learn faith, of a sort, from our parents. We cry and learn we are fed or changed. Once this is repeated often enough, reliance in our parents ability to care for us is established. In the basest sense we learn that fire is hot, water is wet and gravity can hurt our behinds. All from our parents or through our upbringing.
While we can see fire, water and the effects of gravity, we are called upon for a leap of, you’ve got it, faith, for belief in the unseen, unknown or undefined. A gap exists between what we see and understand versus what we cannot see nor seemingly understand. The bridge over that gap is, in my understanding, Faith.

My opinion is that ‘faith’ is an innate condition already established from birth. To put it another way, I believe that faith can be defined as instinct. But the influences of our parents, society, media, religious doctrine etc, blurs and blocks the natural ability to act on one’s own instincts. Therefore I believe that religious faith is taught and learned but spiritual faith is our instinct. We might live our lives according to, and within, the written rules of religious and legal laws, but very often our behaviours are governed by our inner, instinctual faith…faith in oneself, even when taking that ‘leap of…’ into the unknown.
